Tyne Cup
A gorgeous August Sunday saw 63 entrants from all over Yorkshire for Boroughs annual Tyne Cup for the Mick Gates trophy
The quarter finals saw 5 Borough members, Shaughan Temple, Simon Walker, Barrie Watson,Andy Adamson and Dave Pryce still battling for the trophy alongside former member Steve Lonnia who was back in Scarborough for the weekend from his Sheffield home.
Jo Leeman from Whitby ended Temples run with a 21-17 victory to face Lonnia in the semi-final who just ended Walkers run with a 21 -19 victory
Watson came from behind to beat Joyce Harland 21-17 and had to face team mate Pryce who beat Adamson 21-14
Lonnia claimed the first final berth with a 21-16 victory over Leeman whilst Pryce ended Watsons run with a 21-14 win to take the other place
Lonnia won the first 2 ends to take an early lead but Pryce came back and the game became a very tight affair
With the scores close at 19-18 to Pryce, who then put up 2 great woods that looked like taking him the trophy but Lonnia rolled his wood in to take a point and then 2 good leads at the next two ends saw Lonnia secure the victory and add his name to the Mick Gates Trophy
Boyes Cup 2026
Manor Roads Borough Bowling Club hosted the 2026 Boyes Cup on Sunday with 62 entrants from the East Coast District battling it out for the historic trophy which dates back to 1923
On a boiling hot day the green was firm and running fast and very tricky
North Cliffs young bowler Callum Malone was attempting to retain the trophy he won last year and put up a terrific performance fighting his way to the final with some very good bowling
Hunmanby bowler and the oldest man in the field 83 year old Phil Todd was attempting to win the trophy he won previously in his younger days and he also won his way through to the final
After long qualifying rounds starting at 9 am it was almost 8pm when the pair got on the green for the final
Malone dominated the early stages of the game and at 19-15 up with 2 close woods on the Jack looked certain to be retaining the trophy but veteran Todd put up a great wood to stay in the game
The game then see sawed back to Todd and at 19 across he bowled 2 woods that Malone couldn’t beat and took the trophy 21-19
It was an epic victory after an 11 1/2 hour competition on a boiling hot day

Club Finals 10-07-2026
Friday night was Club Cup Finals night at Manor Roads Borough Bowling Club
First up was the Ladies final, in which Lynn Gates played Pauline Allison for the Maltby Cup
On a fast running tricky green after losing the first end Lynn raced away into a 10-2 lead
Once Pauline found the pace of the green she found her way back into the game just 11-10 down
Once again though Lynn took charge of the game and raced away to win 21-14
Second up was the seniors trophy for over 65’s between Club President Shaughan Temple and Club Secretary Barrie Watson for the Russell Cup
Again this game followed a similar pattern with Shaughan racing off into a 7-2 lead before Barrie came back into the game securing a 12-10 lead
Shaughan then took charge of the game and won 7 ends in a row to take the trophy 21-12
The last event was the Foxton novices Cup which saw Pauline Allison in her second final of the night facing Jim Barr
This game was more of a nip and tuck affair with some great bowling from both players
After 19 ends the game was locked at 12 across
First of all Pauline looked to be pulling away as she took a 15-12 lead before Jim won back the Jack and bowled out into a 21-15 victory

KNOCKOUT SHIELD
The East Coast of Yorkshire Crown Green Bowling Association introduced a new trophy this season the Knockout Shield
This was played for by the teams who were first round losers in the popular knockout Cup
The inaugural final was played at Eastfield between Bridlington Bay Bowling Club and the ‘B’ team from Borough Bowling Club
A lovely pleasant evening saw some great bowling but after Boroughs first man John Lloyd won his game 21-8 the Borough team dominated proceedings with 11 winners to take the trophy by 246 points to 178

Remembrance Cup
Sunday saw Borough Bowling Club host the Remembrance Cup which is a drawn triples format sponsored by Alan Lee
There were 12 teams of 3 who played 5 ends against all other 11 teams
Points scored were then totted up and the winners on 62 were Simon Walker, Barry Gosling (both Borough) and David Muir (Eastfield)
In 2nd place with 56 points were Robert Child, Ed McCormack (both North Cliff) and Tommy Roberts (Whitby)
3rd with 51 points were Les Ramm, Tony Bland (both Borough) and Steve Dover (Whitby)
It was a very tiring but very enjoyable Format

Millar Cup Over 60's Merit 26th June
A torrential thunderstorm delayed the start of Manor Roads Borough Bowling Club Miller Cup singles for over 60’s
Once play got underway the atmosphere hotted up and the green soon dried out to produce a nice running green
Jenny Allen of Hunmanby bowled tidily all day but found the semifinal against team mate Billy Holdsworth a game too far and went down 21-11
A similar story in the other semifinal saw Borough veteran Brian Dalby run out of steam against Whitby’s Paul Morgan 21-12 in the second semifinal
The final was a cracking game with first Billy Holdsworth taking a 9-4 lead before Paul Morgan hit back to race into a 12-9 lead
The game then seesawed both ways and with the tie locked at 19 across Holdsworth put 2 great woods up that couldn’t be beaten to take the cup

Mick Gates Open Pairs
Bank holiday Sunday saw a terrific turnout of bowlers from all over Yorkshire for Manor Roads Borough Bowling Clubs annual Mick Gates Open Pairs
With a full turnout of 64 people on a fast running green and scorching day there was some superb bowling that was a great testimony to former Borough Secretary and long standing member Mick Gates who’s family have continually sponsored and supported the event
The semi finals were played out in glorious sunshine and shadows that made accurate bowling very tricky
Whitby’s Ian Richardson paired up with North Cliffs Alan Landers to claim the first final berth defeating Hunmanby veterans Phil Todd and Harry Old 21-14
Whilst Dukes Parks Andy Deighton and Kevin Gates beat Castlefords Gareth Gidman 21-9 for the second final place
Deighton and Gates raced into an early lead and were 17-9 up before Landers and Richardson came back to 17-15
Some great bowling from the Brid pair then got them over the line for a 21-15 victory
This means the Gates name goes on the trophy for the first time as Kevin is Micks son

‘We’re good sports’ – declares Borough Bowling Club as it wins special status
Members of Borough Bowling Club are ‘jack high’ after being granted special status that will protect the use of the Manor Road green and allow them to apply for cash to help the club continue to thrive.
The Scarborough crown green bowling club, established in 1905 and believed to be one of the oldest of its kind in the area, has won North Yorkshire Council accreditation as an Asset of Community Value.
The green is owned by North Yorkshire Council, though it is largely maintained by members of the club. Its surrounding paths and park land is looked after by council staff.
Club treasurer Ken Marshall prepared the report for North Yorkshire Council which led to it granting Asset of Community Value status.
“The Community Asset Scheme runs nationally. It is designed to give local people more control over their resources,” said Mr Marshall.
“Once you have got it, your landlord cannot evict you at a moment’s notice and they have to give you six months to prepare a bid to buy the asset.
“If North Yorkshire Council decided it wanted the land back, it would have to give us six months’ notice to buy the green,” he said.
Due to local planning rules, if the club does not buy the green, North Yorkshire Council has to provide an alternative site of the same or better quality.
“Having Asset of Community Value status absolutely ring-fences control over our destiny,” said Mr Marshall.
It will also allow the club, under the auspices of its secretary Barrie Watson, to bid for a wider range of grants.
“Being granted the status allows us to demonstrate we are a community asset and we have the language and tools which will help with bids,” said Mr Marshall.
Borough Bowling Club boasts more than 90 members who enjoy both social bowling and league competitions across the coast, including Whitby, Bridlington, Eastfield, Hunmanby, Robin Hood’s Bay and Northcliffe in Scarborough.
“The North Yorkshire Council report acknowledges that the club is available for bowling all week throughout the year,” said secretary Mr Watson.
“It encourages intergenerational participation and provides a welcoming environment for all.
“It is a longstanding community hub which has served Scarborough since the beginning of the last century.
“It helps to promote both physical fitness and mental well-being. The club provides an inclusive environment for members who enjoy bowling at club and league levels,” he said.
“It is centrally situated, well established and remains both relevant and valued,” said Mr Watson.

Over 65's Pairs Merit 15-05-2026
It was a cold overcast Friday that saw bowlers from all over the region congregate on Manor Roads Borough Bowling Club for their Annual over 60’s Merit
Borough managed to field 5 of the 8 semi finalists with Pete Charter, Barry Gosling Gary Thornton Caroline Watson and Barrie Watson all taking part
It was the husband and wife team of the Watson’s who took on club mate Gary Thornton and his partner Richard Jackson from Sheffield in the final as the sun finally came out for the day
The game swung backwards and forwards but once the Watsons moved 19-12 ahead the game looked over
However Jackson and Thornton dug in and levelled the game at 19 each
Caroline Watson then bowled 2 superb woods that were not beaten for the husband and wife team to take the trophy

Malton Cup Finals held on the 18th April 2026
On Saturday Manor Roads Borough Bowling Club played the final stages of the historic John Malton trophy that dates back to 1938
The cup is handicapped and Pauline Allison had a 9-3 start against Robin Daplyn in the first semi final and Robin had to produce some top quality woods to claim the first place in the final 21-19
The second semi final was an equally tough battle with Sue Wilkinson getting a 3 point start on Barrie Watson
Watson eventually fighting through with a tense 21-19 victory
Daplyn had a 3 point start in the final and set off well stretching the lead to 5 points and the game became nip and tuck with Daplyn looking poised for victory when 19-14 ahead but Watson came back and at 19-17 down looked poised to even the score with 2 six inch woods
However Daplyn produced a fantastic wood to take the end and move 20-17 up and followed this with a tremendous lead that Watson couldn’t beat to take the trophy 21-17

WEBB CUP 11-04-2026
It was a crisp Spring morning for Manor Roads Borough Clubs Webb Cup Finals day
The first semi final saw Jo Gates dispatch Gary Thornton 21-10 to claim the first Final berth
The second semi was a very tight affair with Les Ramm just edging out Barrie Watson 21-20 with a brilliant last wood
Jo got off to a tremendous start in the final with some superb bowling running into a 10-0 lead before Les got on the card
At 13-3 down though Les started creeping back into the game
The comeback kept coming and Les went 17-16 in front and eventually took the trophy with a remarkable 21-17 victory

POTTER CUP 28-03-2026
It was a lovely sunny but fresh Saturday afternoon that greeted Manor Roads Borough bowling clubs Annual Potter Cup contestants
Holder Margaret Light battled her way to the semi final to face young gun Andy Adamson but couldn’t regain her previous form and was brushed aside 21-11
The other semi final was a very tight affair that went down to the wire with Simon Walker just defeating Sue Wilkinson 21-19
Adamson got away to a brilliant start in the final and had 10 points on the board before Walker managed to score
Walker then came back into the game but the damage was done and he couldn’t reclaim the deficit and Adamson ran out a 21-6 victor

CLUB DOUBLES 21-03-2026
A glorious first day of spring greeted the bowlers from Borough Bowling Club for their annual Club Doubles trophy at the Manor Road Green
Peter Hodgson paired with Barrie Watson had a good victory over Sue Wilkinson and Lil Barr in the first semi final
Whilst John Lloyd and Barry Gosling took the other semi final against Ronnie Noble and Pauline Allison
A good crowd watched the final and the strong pairing of Lloyd and Gosling marched into an impressive 15-5 lead
Hodgson and Watson started picking away at the lead and after 26 ends had pulled it back to 15-19
Hodgson then put up 3 successive great leads and scored a 3, 2 then a 1 to achieve a remarkable comeback and take the trophy 21-19

Open Day and Presidents Cup Final 14-03-2026
It was a beautiful crisp Sunny Saturday morning for Manor Roads Borough Bowling Annual Presidents Day
Newly elected President Shaughan Temple bowled the first woods of the new season to declare the green open for the new year
Shaughan managed to bowl a good wood that landed 2 feet 6 inches away from the Jack that won Elaine Truman a bottle of Prosecco for her “guess the distance” entry of 2 and a half foot
Then the semi finals and final of the Presidents Cup were completed
After 8 weeks of qualifying matches the final was won 21-16 by Stuart Sherburn and Barrie Watson against David Longley and Jim Barr

FIRST WINTER MERIT OF 2026
A record 55 Crown Green Bowlers from all over Yorkshire turned out for Manor Roads first winter Merit of the year
With the toughest of draws 75 year old Geoff Oldham had to beat first Bridlingtons Kevin Gates then West Yorkshire man Andy Webb, Castlefords Liam Massey and Josh Thomas and in the semi final Bridlingtons Chris Dobson to take the first place in the final
Castlefords based Darryl Harrap beat Yorkshire ladies bowler Amanda Hagen, Stuart Thompson from Pontefract, Hunmanby’s Jenny Allen, Kenny Wale from Whitby and then in the semi final Scarborough North Cliff bowler Adam Chilvers to reach the other final berth
Harrap got off to a great start in the final running off into a 12-6 lead before Oldham made a steady comeback to trail 15-17 but then the youthfulness of Harrap came through to win his first East Coast merit 21-15
A first class days bowling was completed in daylight at 4-45pm and Borough President Shaughan Temple is pictured presenting the prizes

Sorry but I have to inform you that former member Richard Wood 1945-2026 died on 2nd January this year. He was Saturday A Team captain in the 1980’s and also a founder member of Brid Bay Bowling Club. His funeral will be held at St Lukes Church, Stepney Drive on Thursday 29th January at 12 noon
