The penultimate merit of the Crown Green bowling summer season was held at Boroughs Manor Road with 60 bowlers from all across the East Coast taking part in the Sandy Clark memorial trophy
David Lowe from Bridlington, returning after a long illness, had to claw his way through a difficult draw beating Eastfields Kevin Garside 21-16, Whitbys Mary Smith 21-12, Boroughs Matthew Bell 21-20, Boroughs Brian Whitehouse 21-14 and in the semi-final Whitbys Tim Purcell 21-16 to book the first final berth
North Cliffs Alan Landers defeated Boroughs Tony Bland 21-14, Boroughs Barry Gosling 21-9, Westgates Steve Ross 21-11, Boroughs Andy Adamson 21-19 and in the semi-final Boroughs Barrie Watson 21-17 to claim the second final place
In the final Lowe raced into a 17-11 lead with some precision bowling and whilst Landers made a brief fight back it was Lowe who took the trophy home with a 21-16 victory.

Saturday saw another great turnout for Boroughs final club cup of the year The Nalton Mixed pairs which threw together some strong pairings
One of which was Barry Gosling and last year’s winner Jo Gates but they were convincingly beaten 21-3 by Kirkby Beal and Caroline Watson who in turn fell in the semi final to another strong pairing of Pete Charter and Di Purdy 21-11
Bob Walker and Carol Roberts took no prisoners on their march to the final beating John Thundercliffe and Sue Wilkinson 21-6, Dave Pryce and Jean Purdy 21-9, and Dave Waite and Joyce Barron 21-1
The final was a tense battle that was neck and neck all the way before Charter and Purdy edged into the lead 19-14 and then crossing the line 21-17 victors
The tea and biscuits was won by Sue Wilkinson and John Purdy beating Pete Hodgson and Steve Taylor 21-17.

The Crown Green Bowling Saturday league ended with a thrilling finale
Dukes Park Bridlington were sitting top of the league having completed their fixtures but with second placed Borough hosting third placed North Cliff on the final day positions at the top had many permutations
North Cliff knew they had to pull off a big victory to overhaul the other two whilst Borough just had to edge home to take the title
After the first four matches ,wins for North Cliffs Danny Cooper and Lee Deighton were cancelled out by wins for Boroughs Andy Adamson and Bob Walker and the title was still in the balance
Borough then took control of the game winning the final eight matches to secure victory and the title leaving Dukes Park as runners up

At the other end of the table Westgate Bridlington A and Bridlington Bay B were relegated being replaced by second division champions, Dukes Park B and North Cliff B.

Borough Bowling club staged their annual Tyne Singles merit at the Manor Road green on Sunday kindly sponsored by Anthony Gordon menswear
Over 70 crown green bowlers took part in the knockout competition which lasted the whole day
The green was in superb condition that suited some great bowling and when Whitby’s Geoff Watson beat teammate Peter Harvey in the first quarter final he looked destined for the final. Dukes Park Bridlington’s number one, Andy Deighton, had other ideas and after dispatching Billy Holdsworth from Hunmanby 21-17 he booked his place in the final beating Watson 21-13
North Cliff’s Ian Richardson was another bowler who looked to be heading for the final seeing off Dukes Park’s Kevin Gates 21-19 in the quarter finals He was met by team mate Alan Landers in the semi final who had just stormed past Whitby’s Ian Hadden 21-6 and it was Landers who took the other final place 21-14
Deighton roared out of the blocks in the final to run up an 19-12 lead before Landers got a proper foothold in the game and came back to 19-15 before 2 precision woods from Deighton sealed the cup with a 21-15 victory
Congratulations to Andy Deighton who was presented the Anthony Gordon sponsored trophy by Borough Bowling Club Secretary, Barrie Watson as Gordon Kipps from Anthony Gordon’s had a prior engagement.

Each year now for a number of years Borough Bowling Club has hosted junior bowling sessions every Thursday morning throughout the school summer holidays to introduce under eighteens to the sport
These have always been successfully run by John and Jean Purdy and this year has seen a greater attendance with around 25 different youngsters on the green at different times from 5 year olds to 17 year olds
John is particularly proud that one of his recent protégés,17 year old Matthew Bell is now club champion at Borough and has won County honours and trophies.
He has also seen a number of youngsters progress into the local leagues successfully and is very confident more will follow from this years classes
Borough’s Manor Road green also hold regular social bowling sessions to introduce anyone, adults or juniors, to the sport and if you fancy a go just turn up at 2pm on a Friday afternoon or 10 am on a Saturday morning and you will be given a warm welcome.

Bank Holiday Monday saw a good turnout of members for the Club Doubles and annual barbecue
After a series of round robins and knockouts Dave Pryce and Caroline Watson emerged to play Andy Adamson and Dave Waite in the final
Pryce and Watson raced into a 20-12 lead but Adamson and Waite fought back into the game and at 20-16 they were lying with 3 woods on before Pryce edged in off a wide wood to roll the Jack and take the game and trophy 21-16
Congratulations to Dave Pryce and Caroline Watson who were presented the trophy by sponsor, Lisa Crowe, estate agents.

It was a pleasant Friday at Manor Road that saw 57 contestants battle it out for the Borough over 60’s Crown Green Bowling club merit
Hunmanby’s Billy Holdsworth was looking for a third consecutive victory and coasted into the semi finals with single figure victories over Phil Austin, Mick Hill,Kenny Rogers and Anne Mitchell. However his club mate Phil Todd also had designs on the trophy and took him out with a clear 21-10 win to book the first final berth
In the second half of the draw it was a close tussle with 3 Borough members involved, Margaret Loyd, Shaughan Temple and Dave Pryce but it was North Cliff’s Eddie McCormack who used his vast experience of fast running greens to win his way through to the final seeing off Mrs Loyd 21-20 in a superb semi-final
Todd was straight out of the blocks in the final racing into an 11-6 lead but McCormack wiped that out levelling the scores at 11 across The game then became a nail biter with neither player getting control until Ed managed to sneak into a 20-15 lead but took three ends to get over the line with a 21-17 win
It was a superb well earned victory by North Cliff’s Eddie McCormack who had bowled so well all day and commiserations to Phil Todd who also had a good day.

A warm Sunday at Manor Road Bowling green saw the rain pass by the hallowed turf for a great setting for Borough Bowling Clubs club championship, the Hutchinson Cup
It was a strong field that took to the green with very few surprises in the early rounds
First surprise of the day was when Bookies favourite Jack Bird was beaten 21-20 by well fancied Steve Price and the quarter final also saw Borough number one Bob Walker forfeit his crown knocked out 21-15 by club chairman Pete Charter
Charter went on to claim his place in the final beating Barrie Watson 21-15 in the semi-final
Price lost out to 17 year old Matthew Bell in the other semi final 21-20 after Bell had already beaten Andy Adamson 21-12 in the quarter final
The final was a very tight game with Bell just shading in front of Charter all the way through eventually winning 21-16
Well done 17 year old Matthew Bell newly crowned Borough number one

The tea and biscuits saw some great bowling with crowd favourite Colin Rodda eventually beating Dave Waite 21-20 in another closely fought game.

A lovely summers evening at Borough Bowling Clubs Manor Road green saw 5 Cup finals played

First up was the Webb Cup Final between Rita Bland and John Thundercliffe which saw John get off to a great start and was soon in a strong position at 15-8 but Rita came back to go 18-17 ahead. John then eased away again into a 20-18 lead and lying with a wood that touched he looked to have won his first trophy. However Rita was having none of it and bowled a superb wood to take the end and ran out a 21-20 winner.

Next final was the Ladies Maltby Bowl between Sue Wilkinson and Jo Gates. Sue was off to a flier in this game and went 7 -0 up, but Jo kept her head and kept pegging points back, though when Sue went 17-14 ahead she looked to have control of the game. Jo then came through and bowled her best woods of the night to take the trophy 21-17

John Thundercliffe then came out for his second appearance of the night to face Dave Waite in the Foxton Cup Final .John set off in determined fashion and after establishing a 14-3 lead he would not let Dave into the game ,eventually running out 21-8 to take the trophy.

Back into the arena came Rita Bland then to face Club Chairman Pete Charter in the Wally Day Cup Final. Rita bowled with supreme confidence and it proved a game that Pete just could not get into no matter how hard he tried . Rita established a 9-3 lead and then stood 17-4 before eventually winning 21-6 to take home her second trophy of the night

The Russell over 65’s Cup Final saw a repeat of an earlier game with John Thundercliffe back on the green to face Dave Waite. This game saw a much more determined effort from Dave after falling 10-5 behind he recovered to level the scores at 10 across but again John forced himself into a 16-10 lead before Dave got a great line and length to roar ahead 18-16 After a few ding-dong ends John looked to have sealed another trophy. John was 20-19 ahead and with 2 good woods on, but Dave produced a superb fire to take the block to his other wood for 2 points and the trophy .

A great night for the club with all finals played and supported in the best spirit of the game.

A glorious July Sunday saw 17 members battle for places in the finals of the two club cups
In the Webb Cup an early shock saw Caroline Watson beat Mick Gates 21-16 but she couldn’t maintain that form losing 21-18 to John Thundercliffe in a close encounter in the next round. John then went on to an impressive 21-19 victory over Jo Gates to book his place in the final
Rita Bland was also in a hot streak of form beating Joyce Barron 21-17 then Barry Gosling 21-14 before booking her place in the final with a tough fought 21-18 victory over Penny Gosling
The afternoon saw Rita continue the form beating Dave Waite and Barry Gosling again to claim a place in the Wally Day Cup final
Pete Charter had to beat Penny Gosling , Mick Gates and Jo Gates to book the other final place.
Finals to be played on Finals Day on Friday 2nd August at 6pm.

Borough’s Jo Gates made history on Sunday by becoming the first lady ever to win the prestigous Boyes Cup.

Jo wasn’t happy with the draw as she was plunged in the first round against twin sister Lynn. Next to be dispatched was recent multiple merit winner Geoff Oldham.

In the quarter final Jo beat Westgate’s Tommy Donald 21-14

 North Cliff’s Robert Child must have thought it was to be his day after seeing off triple tournament favourites Andy Deighton, Kenny Wale and Paul Morgan but Jo wasnt letting anybody past her and she saw him off 21-19

 Last year’s winner Mick Gates looked on in amazement as his daughter Jo was up against her brother Kevin in the final but it was Jo who reigned supreme with a superb 21-14 victory

 Congratulations Jo a worthy champion.

Thanks to everyone who turned up this morning to help, 15 in total was a brilliant turnout and job was completed by 11.10 am complete with cups of tea and biscuits

A cloudy but nice Sunday saw 22 entrants for Borough Bowling Clubs Ted King doubles shield
Pete Charter and Phil Austin marched out of the group stages leaving the pairings of Mick Gates and Pete Hodgson and Penny Gosling and John Purdy in their wake
Jo Gates and Joyce Barron also never dropped a point on their way to the semi-final and dispatched Pete and Phil 21-15 for the first final place
Keith Watson and Sue Wilkinson were a strong pairing who battled their way to a semi final victory 21-12 over Liam Vasey and Shaughan Temple
Keith and Sue soon forged their way into an impressive lead of 14-12 and then 18-16 but with Joyce leading superbly backed up by the usual consistency of Jo this lead was soon clawed back. Joyce and Jo then ran in a 4 wood end. Then Joyce followed this with a superb touching lead wood that wasn’t beaten and Joyce Barron and Jo Gates were the 2018 winners of the Ted King shield.

Youngster Liam Vasey fought his way to the semi-final but lost out 21-12 to the old head of Bob Walker
Dave Waite used his handicap well to steer his way to the final beating Caroline Watson 21-18 in the semi- final
Bob Walker couldn’t afford any mistakes when having to give a 9 points start to Dave Waite in the final and he didn’t make many battling to a superb 21-17 victory to take the cup he last won 14 years ago

In the consolation competition John Thundercliffe beat Di Purdy.

In the GT Garages sponsored Open doubles at Borough Bowling Club on Manor Road 74 bowlers set off on a cloudy Sunday morning that finished in glorious afternoon sunshine Ian Richardson and Alan Landers from North Cliff set off on a mission to knock out as many home bowlers as they could beating Dave Pryce and Mick Gates 21-19, Caroline Watson and Joyce Barron 21-4, Jack Bird and Bob Walker 21-15, and Rita and Tony Bland 21-10 Before taking their place in the final they also saw off the strong father and daughter pairing of Andy and Stacey Deighton from Dukes Park 21-16 Geoff Watson of Whitby also had a mission to reach a third consecutive merit final and along with his partner, Geoff Oldham from Dukes Park they made it.

They narrowly beat Dukes Kevin Gates and Gary Puleston 21-20 , then Whitbys Tim Purcell and Ray Leeman 21-16 followed by another 21-20 against Dukes Chris and Dee Dobson and yet another 21-20 defeat of Whitbys Kenny Wale and Sue Emmerson The final saw Watson and Oldham race into a 10-4 lead but it was soon 10 across and the game became neck and neck before some neat bowling saw Richardson and Landers edge away and take the game 21-17 Congratulations to Ian Richardson and Alan Landers who bowled superbly all day to take home the trophy.

On a pleasant Saturday afternoon 14 bowlers from Borough Bowling Club took on 14 bowlers from North Cliff Bowling Club for the Terry Summersgill Memorial Trophy. The game was always intended on being a social event with a raffle and tea and cakes to raise funds for St Catherine’s Hospice who had given great care to bowler Terry in his final days
The day was a great success and Borough won eight out of the ten matches played to take home the trophy
£551 was raised on the day and the following day Robin Hoods Bowling Club kindly donated their charity Car Parking fund of £235, which means a total of £786 will be donated to St Catherine’s Hospice.

On Easter Sunday 66 hardy bowlers turned out in the GT Garages drawn pairs merit at Manor Road Scarborough The random draw threw together some interesting pairs
Flying the flag for Borough Bowling Club were John Thundercliffe and Caroline Watson who were going well before just losing out 21-19 to North Cliffs Eddie McCormack and Whitby’s Kenny Wale in the quarter finals However it was the strong pairing of Dukes Park’s Dave Lowe and Hunmanby’s Phil Todd who took the first final berth beating McCormack and Wale 21-9 in the semi-final.

In the bottom half of the draw North Cliff’s Ashley Douglas and Borough’s Penny Gosling were knocking out all in front of them before being stopped 21-9 by Borough’s Dave Pryce and Robin Hood Bay’s Stan Sleighthome in the quarter final The second semi final saw the strong pairing of Borough’s Bobby Walker and North Cliff’s NIgel Trotter see off Pryce and Sleighthome 21-11 to claim the second final place
The final saw some fine precision bowling from Lowe and Todd who ran out winners 21-9 to take the trophy

On Saturday 7 April Eddie McCormack will lead a team of 12 friends of Terry’s from North Cliff to play a similar team of 12 from Borough in what we intend to become a curtainraiser each season. We are going to run a raffle in order to raise money for St.Catherines Hospice who gave Terry some fantastic care for his final days. We have been pledged some special prizes already from members of other clubs which should help us raise a good sum of money in Terry’s honour, and we hope as many members as possible will turn out to make this a special day.

Our good friend and longstanding member Terry sadly passed away in St Catherines Hospice on Wednesday 21st February we send our condolences to his family.

57 hardy winter bowlers turned out on a wet Sunday for the latest Crown Green Bowling Merit at Borough Bowling Club.

It was always going to be a tough contest to win and after Robin Hoods Bay’s Tim Purcell defeated Borough’s Ian Hadden 21-20 in a quality semi- final he looked a good bet with the local bookie
Castleford’s Colin Schora had a different idea after dispatching Whitby’s Alan Landers 21-18 in his semi-final.

It was a ding dong final and Tim was 20-19 up with a good wood on the block when he looked to the bookie for his payout but he hadn’t figured with Colin bowling a brilliant last wood to level the scores at 20-20
Colin then made a brilliant lead on the next end that wasn’t beaten to take the day in style.

A consolation tea and biscuits doubles contest was run for first game losers that was won 21-20 by Gary Pulestan and Phil Rippingale beating Kath Brown and Danny Cooper.

The green was cut on Thursday 12th Jan and it’s going to be spiked in the next few days and then some iron applied so will be closed for the day when it’s been done weather permitting.

Open day for 2018 season will be 10th March at 10am.
